KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2, 2015:

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied ever issuing a statement saying that all social media will be banned beginning this Tuesday.

Taking it to his social networking site Twitter, Ahmad Zahid posted a picture of a poster with him allegedly saying that he had approved for all social media sites to be blocked and captioned it with, “I have never issued the following statement.”

The poster was recently uploaded in a website (www.harianmetro.org) and was captioned as “New DPM approves the shutting down of all social media sites?” and “We will block all social sites this Tuesday” next to a picture of Ahmad Zahid.

The post had infuriated many social media users who were upset by the possibility of having their access denied.

Even Bersih picked up the report, posting it on its Facebook page and captioned it with “Malaysia, the new North Korea?”

Others who were also unaware that the report was untrue were quick to jump to the conclusion that the government was attempting to put a clampdown on all those who had or will post anything detrimental to its reputation.

Some had even threatened to bring on a “revolution” and predicted that the move will be the ultimate fall for the economy as well as Barisan Nasional (BN).
