KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1, 2015:
Unfazed by police warnings, youths and other citizens gathered this afternoon outside Sogo Shopping Complex to partake in the #TangkapNajib rally organised by Youth non-governmental organisation (NGO) Demi Malaysia.
This after police arrested Simpang Pulai assemblyman Tan Kar Hing and Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang when they refused to leave the area and stop the assembly. This sparked rally-goers to get rowdy by 2.20pm, and several individuals were believed to have let off two fireworks. By 3pm, 20 or so youths were arrested and immediately taken to Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters, according to Lawyers for Liberty executive director Eric Paulsen, who was present. Also spotted was Sangeet Kaur Deo, lawyer and daughter of Karpal Singh, who was present with her younger brother and some friends to show support for the assembly. Speaking to The Rakyat Post, she expressed shock over the arrests that took place. The sequence of events not only halted traffic, but shoppers as well, as Sogo shopping complex and boutiques along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR) closed temporarily by 2.30pm. By 3.10pm, while the crowd was slowly dispersing, Jalan TAR saw some excitement when Annie Ooi, famously known as Aunty Bersih, made an appearance.
Several minutes later, loyal Opposition supporter known as Uncle Song also made an appearance, but both were arrested within minutes of staging their own protest.
