KUALA LUMPUR, July 15, 2015:
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Malaysians must remember the country’s secret to success and prosperity, which is unity in diversity.
“Unity in diversity has made what Malaysia is today, so please learn how to tolerate, be moderate and accommodating.
“Please don’t do anything that can lead to racial problems such as gangster fights.
“I would also like to advise users of social media not to become catalyst as to what could happen next (racial tensions),” he told reporters when visiting the Low Yat Plaza today.
He said Malaysia is a nice country where people from all races have lived very happily since independence but warned that there are those, whom he described as “third parties”, who would want to see the country fail.
He said this is because Malaysia has turned out to be a model multi-ethnic country which the world should follow.
“Please remember that our forefathers had given us a very good foundation.
“Be together and work together in achieving a better nation, as what we would like to achieve in 2020 as a developed nation.”
He reminded the people not to take the law into their own hands but instead report to the authorities accordingly.
Tengku Adnan also expressed hope that people will return to Low Yat Plaza and not listen to rumours.
At the same time, he said there was a need to look at the freedom available to users of social media as they had been putting up all sorts of things.
“You know very well that maybe only 20% are true, the rest are lies.
“People write bad about me, about national leaders, everything is something wrong,” said Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general.
In an incident last Saturday, two men were arrested for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a shop upstairs in Plaza Low Yat.
They tried to escape but were arrested by employees of mobile phone maker Oppo, located on the first floor.
Both suspects were arrested but police released one of the them based on discretion and without referring to a senior officer.
The shoplifters went back to the plaza later with a group of friends to seek revenge.
This subsequently led to another larger group assembling outside the plaza to protest on the shoplifter’s behalf on Sunday night, resulting in four people being injured.
Unfortunately, irresponsible quarters have been stirring racial tensions over the incident.
