KUALA LUMPUR, July 13, 2015:
MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai clarified that a Twitter account under the name @MCAPresident and YB Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is fake and had nothing to do with him. A statement by Liow’s press secretary Lim Chau Leng stated that the fake username had been quoted in an online news report by Astro Awani on the fight that broke out at Low Yat Plaza over the weekend which gained much attention as a racial issue. The news report titled “Pergaduhan Low Yat tiada kaitan dengan perkauman” — Netizen (“Low Yat fight nothing to do with racism — Netizens”). “The views expressed under the name have nothing to do whatsoever with Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai nor do they reflect his opinion on the matter,” it said. Lim said the official Twitter username of Liow is @liowtionglai and that the MCA president had tweeted in April 21 last year to clarify about the fake account. The fake comment had since been removed from the news report. Lim added that the matter would be reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as it was a serious offence. Meanwhile, Selangor state executive councillor Elizabeth Wong was also victimised. In a press release today, Wong said she had been alerted this afternoon of a fake Twitter status attributed to her regarding the Low Yat Plaza incident. “I have not used Twitter for months and I have yet to make any Facebook commentary on the issue either. “I will be alerting the relevant authorities to take the necessary action on the culprits who faked my identity.” She also urged the public to inform her if they had seen it around or know the source, so that it can be forwarded to the authorities. In Saturday night’s incident, a ruckus broke out after a shoplifter went back to the plaza, along with a group of his friends to seek revenge. This subsequently led to another group gathering outside the plaza, renowned for selling electronic gadgets, to protest on the shoplifter’s behalf. Unfortunately, irresponsible quarters have been stirring racial hatred over the incident.
