KUALA LUMPUR, June 14, 2015:
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan stated that the party’s future lies in the hands of the people rather than one individual.
He told The Rakyat Post that the party is bigger than a single individual and that its strength comes from all levels within the society.
Abdul Rahman said this when asked to comment on the statement by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that Umno might disappear because the principles and objectives of those currently in the party differ from previous generations.
“The fact that Umno would just disappear is not true and I do not agree with Tun M.
“A party’s strength does not rest in the hands of one or two, even three individuals but on the millions of people who supported Umno over the years,” he said.
Abdul Rahman, who is also the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister, insisted that this issue had been raised even during Dr Mahathir’s administration and even in the midst of growing concerns, he still remained as Prime Minister.
He further added that Umno still holds the most seats in Parliament.
“What’s important is the need to strengthen at the grassroots level to ensure the continued might of the party,” he said.
Dr Mahathir issued a statement yesterday on the possibility of Umno, a party which has existed for 69 years, disappearing soon.
He said the principles and objectives of previous generations of Umno members were that they fought to achieve independence for the country, not for the sake of their personal interests.
