KUALA LUMPUR, May 29, 2015:
The audit and investigations into the troubled national sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) has to be conducted in a timely manner, says Gerakan chief Datuk Mah Siew Keong.
According to a report by the English daily The Sunyesterday, Mah in a press conference called on the public to avoid rushing into judgement over the controversial issue involving 1MDB.
This, he had said was to avoid impinging on 1MDB’s market confidence while the Auditor-General and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) conduct an audit and investigation on the government owned investment arm.
“PAC also comprises of Pakatan Rakyat representatives. They have the necessary tools to seek the answers they claim to be seeking, and they should exercise restraint when commenting on the issue as it will jeopardise the investigation they are a part of as well.
“The longer this issue drags on, the speculation and innuendo will abound. This will not only affect 1MDB, but also the companies who seek to do business with 1MDB.
“I look forward to the presentation of 1MDB’s recovery plan which will be proposed to the Cabinet soon, and the plan must inspire the necessary confidence in the market and investors to ensure that it can be implemented effectively,” added Mah who is also a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
It was reported earlier that PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed had echoed the same sentiment when he asked leaders and the public to be patient and let them do their job the way they were supposed to.
“Everybody wants us to rush and do things quickly but if we come up with any conclusion that might not be in their favour or their liking, then they will blame us.”
Nur Jazlan was also reported to have said that the public needs to realise that PAC’ investigation started just over a week ago, and interference from political leaders as well the people would more likely render its report less credible.
