KUALA LUMPUR, May 25, 2015:
Foreigners and tourists who want to make withdrawals from local ATMs can save on charges if they use the new Maybank MOTAC Visa prepaid card rather than ones they bring from their home countries.
This new prepaid card was launched today by Maybank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and Visa, to offer more convenience to tourists – similar to prepaid phone cards.
“The prepaid card can be obtained at Maybank, tourism desk or the airport. You need only register online or fax us and you’ll receive an SMS alert after your prepaid card is activated,” said Maybank executive vice president and head of cards B. Ravintharan.
He said the MOTAC Visa Prepaid Card is a payment instrument that allows one to purchase goods and services much like any credit or debit card – but one does not need to set up an account with the bank.
Once obtained, the card can be loaded via online payment on Maybank2u, cash deposit machines at Maybank branches or interbank GIRO services.
As the service is extended for overseas banks to transfer money into the card, foreigners can then withdraw cash from Maybank ATMs when travelling here – skipping on interbank fees charged on overseas-issued ATM card withdrawals.
Aside from making ATM withdrawals, the prepaid card can be used at any of the 40,000 registered Visa merchants nationwide for purchases of goods and services.
“We have a limited edition of about 10,000 cards available nationwide and the card is valid for use of seven years.
“This new card no only provides a cashless payment convenience for local and international tourists, it is also bundled with exclusive merchant offers that provide tremendous savings and rewards,” said Ravintharan.
Currently, the card – with its key partner Berjaya Hotels and Resorts – provides 15% off best available rates at all their outlets in Malaysia including Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and many others.
Other benefits include 15% off discount on all food items at Rasa Utara and a free original glazed doughnut with purchase of coffee at Krispy Creme.
