KUALA LUMPUR, April 30, 2015:
Just like the mobile prepaid GST fiasco, Astro also fumbles in the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight.
Via its twitter handle, @Astroonline, in replying to a query by a Twitter user, it had written: “Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather LIVE & EXCLUSIVE on HBO HD (Astro Ch431/SD Ch 411) and Astro on the Go on May 3 9am. Subscribe to Movie pack to watch.”
But minutes after that tweet, @Astroonline replied to other Twitter users that the fight would not be shown live on any of their channels.
Despite the flip flop replies on Astro’s Twitter page to its customers, it later clarified that the biggest welterweight fight event would, in fact, be shown on its HBO channel.
Malaysians created a petition via change.org to urge the fight to be shown over the weekend.
It began with 35 signatures to show Astro that boxing fans in Malaysia wanted to order the pay per view fight, when earlier there were no plans to show it on Astro.
The Rakyat Post had reported on the petition a few days ago, highlighting the request by fans.
The petition garnered 434 signatures two days ago and it also resulted in a reply on Facebook from Astro to the petition creator, Belvin Gill.
“Hi All, as sports fan ourselves, we share your disappointment. The cost for the broadcast rights for the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather match has increased 10 fold. “Hence, the pay-per-view fee for this match is estimated to increase several times compared with the fee for previous Manny Pacquiao boxing matches.
“For your information, the pay per view fee for a Manny Pacquiao boxing match last year was RM49.95 for residential customers. “On the other hand, rest assured that we are looking into this petition thoroughly and have forwarded to the relevant team for its review,” the reply said as reported in The Rakyat Post two days ago.
