KUALA LUMPUR, April 7, 2015:The Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Maicci) urged former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to stop discrediting Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Malaysiakini reports.
Maicci secretary-general M. Davendran said instead of attacking Najib on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Dr Mahathir “should repent”.
“Mahathir should first look at his own weaknesses during his administration,” Davendran was quoted by the news portal as saying.
Malaysia’s fourth premier, he said, should support Najib as Dr Mahathir managed to run the country without any “undue attacks from his predecessors”.
“Mahathir has done a lot for Malaysia, but it is best for him to think good, do good and say good, and repent for (his) wrongdoings during his tenure.
“Please keep in mind that being an elder statesman, whatever you say will be deemed as gospel truth and whatever negative you say may do more harm than good for the country,” Malaysiakini quoted Davendran as saying. Dr Mahathir, in his blog on April 2, had said that Malaysians did not trust Najib and Barisan Nasional (BN) would lose the next general election if the Prime Minister remained in power.
He also highlighted various allegations made against Najib and wrote that none of them had been adequately answered.
The next day, Special Affairs Department (Jasa) director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, in an interview with Astro Awani, said that they would take more aggressive measures in countering Dr Mahathir’s criticism.
Puad said Jasa would not be defensive, but instead be on an “attack mode” through social media to combat allegations made by Dr Mahathir.
