JOYCE Chu is going places. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, then no doubt it will soon.
The Malaysian singer became an online sensation when her song Malaysian Chabor became viral hit last year (it has since been viewed more than 8.5 million times and has spawned parodies and covers).
The Johor-born lass, who sang of her love for cendol and keropok, is now set to follow her dreams of becoming a singer-actress in Singapore by starring in the city state’s first cosplay-themed film.
(In cosplay, participants wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a character or idea.)
Titled Young & Fabulous, the movie is a coming-of-age tale of a group of teenage friends (played by Joshua Tan, Aloysius Pang, Jeffrey Xu and Chu) who are united by a shared love of cosplay. (http://www.todayonline.com/entertainment/movies/young-fabulous-spores-first-cosplay-themed-film)
Directed by Kelvin Sng (who directed the 2013 box office hit Taxi! Taxi!), it will also feature Gurmit Singh, Quan Yi Fong, Henry Thia and Jacelyn Tay as the parents and teachers of the young protagonists.
Pang stars as a friendless, introverted Secondary Four nerd whose secret cosplay hobby attracts the attention of the school’s “it” girl (Chu) and the resident jock (Tan).
Gurmit plays their disciplinary master, who manages to find a way to connect with them.
The report revealed how the veteran actor was looking forward to taking on a non-comedic role, vastly different from the iconic Phua Chu Kang character he brought to life in the 1990s.
For Sng, who was formerly a teacher, a coming-of-age story such as this is close to his heart.
“Cosplay is just a theme for a story about students chasing their dreams, choosing the road less taken, friendship and kinship,” he says in the article.
With a thriving cosplay community in Singapore — its longest-running cosplay international convention, Cosfest Asia, is now in its 13th year — a movie paying tribute to this performance art is long overdue.
With a production budget of S$1.2 million (RM3.24 million), Young & Fabulous is produced by Encore Films in collaboration with SIMF Management and Golden Village Pictures.
Filming commences on April 15.
