PENGKALAN CHEPA, March 22, 2015:

A nonagenarian couple cast their ballots today for the Chempaka state seat by-election, here, despite being wheel-chair bound.

Che Abdul Rahman Yaacob, 96, and Che Mah Ismail, 91, who were wheeled in conducted their duties as Malaysians by casting their votes at SK Parang Puting at 9am today.

“We came as we are responsible towards our grandchildren.

“We have never missed the responsibility as voters ever since Independence,” Che Mah said.

The couple who have five children, 40 grandchildren along with 10 great grandchildren have voted a total of 14 times in their life time.

The couple from Kampung Teluk Kitang who came accompanied by their son said they hope Malaysians would emulate their actions today.

Che Mah said the responsibility in voting is a chance to form a government or leadership based on choice.

“We want the best for our grandchildren and to us, religion is important next to education,” he said.

The Chempaka by-election takes place today which sees a five-way battle between PAS’ candidate Ahmad Fathan Mahmood @ Muhammad and Independent candidates Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, 48, Sharif Mahmood, 59, Fadzillah Hussin, 55, and Aslah Mamat, 64.

The by-election was necessitated after the death of its former state assemblyman Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat due to prostate cancer.
