A couple’s trip to introduce their new bundle of joy to relatives ended in tragedy when they, along with their five-day-old baby girl, were killed in a head-on collision yesterday.
The tragedy at Km59 Beluran-Telupid Road also saw a 50-year-old woman, identified as Gaya Gudang, killed.
Ridzuan Basnu, 30, and Noorlialah Masli, 25, and Gaya were killed on the spot.
The infant died on the way to hospital.
The couple’s four-year-old son, Ahmad Kidam Rizuan, and a relative, Mohamad Hazawan Masli, 16, escaped with serious injuries.
Police have not ascertained how Gaya was related to the couple.
Beluran district police chief Superintendent Sivanathan Velautham said the husband and wife were travelling from Beluran to Telupid in their Perodua MyVi when it was involved in a collision with a Toyota Hilux a 2.50pm.
He said the four-wheel drive vehicle driver was believed to have lost control of his vehicle and skidded onto the opposite lane before crashing into the Perodua MyVi head-on, causing it to turn turtle at the roadside.
The 30-year-old driver of four-wheel drive vehicle and his passenger escaped unhurt.
He added that the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing death, which carries imprisonment of two to 10 years and a fine of up to RM20,000, if found guilty.
