KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23, 2015:

Some 150 people gathered opposite the French embassy here after Friday prayers today to protest against the works of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which had insulted Prophet Muhammad.

Organised by the local chapter of Hizb ut-Tahrir, the group’s media head, Abdul Hakim Othman, said war, in the form of jihad, was the only way to deal with France if no action was taken against Charlie Hebdo.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is an international pan-Islamic political organisation that actively promotes the unification of Muslim countries as an Islamic state governed by the syariah law.

Abdul Hakim said Malaysian Muslims must defend the Prophet by waging jihad on France, adding that it was up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to do so.

“Otherwise, the army should,” he added.

“We want to send a message that Muslims will not be quiet and will rise to defend the religion.

“The people who insulted the Prophet, crossed the line, so it is up to Malaysia and all Muslim countries to avenge the Prophet,” he said after leading the protest and handing over a memorandum to the embassy.

He claimed the magazine Charlie Hebdo was allowed by the government of France to insult the Prophet.

“They gave the magazine the green light and encouragement to insult Muslims.”

He said the group today successfully handed over a memorandum to the French embassy to object against the insults published by the magazine.

“We demanded action to be taken against Charlie Hebdo for insulting the prophet. We also objected to the France government’s policy of allowing the magazine to insult the Prophet.”

Meanwhile, the Australian chapter of Hizb ut-Tahrir also was reported to have planned a similar rally in Sydney’s west today.

According to AFP, a spokesman for the group said the rally would be a “respectful, peaceful, well-organised event”. Called the “Our Prophet, Our Honour” rally, it was said to be in protest against negative depictions of the Prophet, namely like the ones in Charlie Hebdo.
