KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10, 2014:
Give Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak time to fulfil his mandate, a former minister has told former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Special adviser to the government on socio-cultural affairs Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim also urged the former Prime Minister to reveal the candidates who could take over the helm from Najib.
Dr Mahathir had yesterday revealed in an exclusive interview with Sinar Harian that many were willing to replace Najib, but Umno was reluctant to allow them to.
“If Tun M himself has said it, we just have to wait and see who the candidates he is talking about are,” Rais told reporters after launching the International Book Conference at the Putra World Trade Centre, here, today.
The former Information, Communication and Culture Minister, however, said although he respected Dr Mahathir’s views, he said Najib still had three years of his mandate to be fulfilled.
“He still has more ‘products’ to be implemented and although Dr Mahathir is a wise man, every government has its flaws.
“So credit should be given to Najib where it is due and we should allow him time to let him do his job.”
In the run-up to the Umno annual general assembly last month, Dr Mahathir had pulled out from supporting Najib in August.
Citing policies which did not bring benefits to the country, Dr Mahathir, however, said he did not call for Najib’s resignation, but merely told Najib to be firm.
In accusing Najib of being “soft”, with the tendency to keep quiet when faced with problems, Dr Mahathir said Najib’s performance was worse than his predecessor, Tun Dr Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, during the 13th General Election.
