KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27, 2014:

Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today reminded Umno members that the Sedition Act is not a tool to remain in power.

In his blog, paklah.net, the former Umno president said the sudden U-turn by his successor Datuk Seri Najib Razak to retain the Act showed his concern with the restlessness, anxiety and the desire faced by the Malays in general.

“I support the decision to retain or amend any law that protects national harmony, that upholds our Constitution, that affirms the social contract forged by our forefathers.

“And that ensures that the Federation of Malaysia is not destroyed by irresponsible people. All this, I support,” he posted.

Abdullah then went on to issue his reminder.

“In our enthusiasm in welcoming the retention of the Sedition Act, I want to remind Umno members that the Act is not a tool to be used to maintain power.”

In reminding that the party’s strength comes from the support of the people, he said: “Remember, if people are not supporting us, no law on God’s Earth can save Umno from losing its power.”

Abdullah’s subtle yet strongly worded caution comes following Najib’s announcement at the Umno general assembly this morning that the controversial Sedition Act will be retained, and fortified.

Najib’s stance is totally in contrast with the one he took in 2012, in saying that the Act will be replaced with a Harmony Bill.
