KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23, 2014:
Young people should be given the opportunity to be in the Umno leadership for a successful rejuvenation of the party, said Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He said they should be guided to lead so that the party would be seen as inclusive, modern, progressive and dynamic.
“Not all (young people) don’t support us. In fact, many support us. Previously, there were many university students who did not support us, but now more are supporting us after we’ve worked hard on engaging with young people.
“We want to continue to be in power, so we must rejuvenate the party and look for capable leaders to lead,” he said in his speech when opening the Federal Territories Umno Convention at the Putra World Trade Centre here.
The Prime Minister said the people were smarter now in evaluating the level of leadership of a political party and always compared Umno’s capability with that of the Opposition.
Therefore, he said, Umno should be wise and creative in understanding the new political landscape and in using the social media platform to engage with society, and answer the questions posed to the party.
“The Opposition is full of nonsense, a lot of sham and it is very good at spinning. But we (Umno) are a party with a realistic agenda for the country, the Malays and Islam.
“So, in this openness, in this new environment, Umno has to be the champion.”
