KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22, 2014:PKR deputy president Azmin Ali is Selangor’s new Menteri Besar.
The Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman was in the running to replace outgoing Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim after the latter tendered his resignation on Aug 26 to the Selangor Sultan.
Azmin is set to be sworn in officially tomorrow at the Balairong Seri, Istana Alam Shah, Klang at 10am.
The Selangor Sultan had chosen Azmin over two other candidates; Pas’ Cempaka assemblyman Iskandar Samad and Sijangkang assemblyman Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi.
Earlier, top leaders of PKR along with its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife and former candidate hopeful, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail held a meeting at the party’s headquarter here at 5.30pm.
Later that evening, PKR unanimously endorsed the Selangor Sultan’s decision in appointing Azmin as the state’s Menteri Besar.
Azmin said a consensus was reached in the three-hour long meeting with party leaders and members.
“At about 3pm today, I had received an official letter from the Selangor palace on the ruler’s decision on my appointment as the Selangor Menteri Besar,”
“After that, I informed the leaders of the party and a meeting was held at 5pm,” Azmin said after attending the meeting at the party’s headquarters here at Merchant Square today..
He went on to thank his president and all party members who had agreed unanimously with his appointment.
Meanwhile, the party’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not comment further on the appointment. He only said the meeting was “positive” before leaving the party’s headquarters.
