KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26, 2014: PKR and DAP have jointly nominated Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as their candidate for the Selangor Menteri Besar post. This came after the Sultan of Selangor decreed for the two parties and PAS to nominate two candidates each for the position. In a joint statement by PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua, they stated their respect for the Sultan’s decision and also acknowledged the decision to be in accordance with conventions that were practised by Pakatan in 2013 as well. They stated that the Sultan had asked for a list of nominees in 2013, when the coalition received a letter dated May 7, 2013, from the palace on the matter. “Following that, taking into account the Sultan’s decree, Pakatan Rakyat nominated one name, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, to be considered in 2013. “Therefore, Keadilan and DAP honour the Sultan of Selangor’s move today and present Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah’s candidacy for consideration of His Highness, the Sultan of Selangor,” they stated. They added that Dr Wan Azizah also commanded the majority support of at least 30 state assemblymen, including the candidate herself.
Abdul Khalid had earlier met with the Sultan to present his wish to resign as Menteri Besar.
The Sultan postponed accepting the resignation until a new Menteri Besar is appointed and asked PAS, DAP and PKR to each name more than two candidates because they were not one entity.
