PUTRAJAYA, 17 June:A cyclist in his 30s was bitten by a snake in Putrajaya when his mountain bike accidentally ran over the reptile in Putrajaya Challenge Park (PCP) last weekend. PCP assistant manager Mohd Bazli Mohd Najib said the cyclist, a teacher based here, was reaching the end of the park’s 9km outdoor trail when the incident happened. “The teacher, a regular at the park, was cycling downhill with several friends and could not see the snake which was crossing the road. “The serpent got entangled in the rim and bit the cyclist in the leg as he fell down from the bicycle. “The snake slithered back into the forest after lying motionless around the fallen bicycle for a while,” he toldThe Rakyat Post. He said it was fortunate that the snake was non-poisonous and the cyclist, who also had minor bruises on his body, was discharged after receiving outpatient treatment at a nearby hospital. He said the yellowish brown snake was the type usually seen in palm oil plantations, common here before the administrative capital was built in 1995. Mohd Bazli said it was the first time such an incident had happened at the 30ha park, touted among Asia’s best extreme park, in Putrajaya’s Precinct 5. “As a preventive measure against dangerous wild animals, including wild boars, the park is checked by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) every three months. “A construction project nearby which started recently has driven a number of wild animals, mostly monkeys, to the park.”
