The body of a newborn baby boy, believed to have been delivered less than 24 hours ago was found in a toilet bowl pump tank in a government clinic here earlier today.
Seberang Perai Utara OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said the newborn’s body was found by a woman who had gone to the toilet while waiting for her turn to seek treatment at the clinic.
“In the 9.10am incident, the shocking discovery was made when the woman wanted to flush the toilet but suspected something amiss when she was not able to do so and instinctively removed the lid of the pump and saw the tiny body.
“She immediately notified the staff there who in turn contacted the police,” he said, adding that post-mortem at the Seberang Jaya Hospital showed that the baby was about 7 months old, weighing 1.7kg. The umbilical cord had been removed.
The case, he said, was being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code and statements had been recorded from all witnesses.
“We have obtained close-circuit television camera (CCTV) footage from the clinic and the list of patients seeking treatment there to trace the mother of the baby,” added Abdul Rahman.
He urged those with information to contact the police.
