KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28
The construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in most parts of the city has been a bane to motorists as it has caused additional congestion in some major areas here.
A meeting with the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT project team today revealed that the project was advancing on schedule.
The team said its great concern was for the people’s safety during construction period, and added that the traffic jams were temporary.
The primary step will involve the temporary closure of traffic lanes at night due to severe traffic congestion during the day and for mobilisation of heavy machines.
“We will be working at night to minimise any inconvenience and to safeguard people’s safety,” MRT Corp Strategic Communications and Public Relations director Amir Mahmood Razak said today.
MRT Corp is also taking other precautionary steps such as the use of netting for hanging structures over the road to prevent any material from falling and using flagmen to help manage the traffic at U-turns and beneath the flyovers.
Road signs and pole markers have been put up to safeguard motorists against machinery swinging out of the work area while blinkers have been installed to improve visibility at night.
People are reminded that the 24-hour road closures presently will go on till the end of June. This involves the slip road from Ma’arof to Petaling Jaya along the SPRINT highway and the U-turn from Petaling Jaya to the Ma’arof interchange.
The road diversion from Jalan Ma’arof to Jalan Johar will be close from 10pm to 5am until March 3.
The upcoming road closures scheduled in March classified as Stage 1 by MRT Corp include the closure of the left-most and middle lanes along the SPRINT highway (flyover at the Ma’arof Interchange, Petaling Jaya bound) from 10pm to 6am.
Under Stage 1, the junction from Jalan Ma’arof to Jalan Medang Serai heading downhill to Jalan Johar, and from Petaling Jaya heading uphill towards Jalan Ma’arof will be closed from 10pm to 6am from March 4 to March 31.
Stage 2, which come into effect from March 15 to March 31, will see the full closure of the Jalan Ma’arof Interchange, including both slip roads from Jalan Ma’arof to Petaling Jaya along the SPRINT Highway, and from the city to Jalan Ma’arof, from 10pm to 6am.
