Northwesterly winds from Sumatra may cause the ashes of Mount Sinabung in Indonesia to move towards the south of Peninsular Malaysia and disrupt flight operations and reduce visibility, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

In a statement here on Monday, the department said the latest information showed that the winds in this direction would continue to blow until Feb 6.

Last Saturday, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency of Indonesia reported at least 14 deaths and three injured following the eruption of Mount Sinabung in the Karo district in North Sumatra.

The department will continue to monitor developments and keep the people updated from time to time.
