HULU BESUTThe Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) yesterday transported a captured wild male elephant. It will be translocated to forests in Sungai Ketiar, Hulu Terengganu. The operation took five hours, using the services of tame female elephants Kala and Rambai, from the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Unit. The three-tonne elephant was captured last Tuesday at the Kampung Keruak jungle after it, together with four or five other elephants, destroyed oil palm trees belonging to local farmers. Terengganu Perhilitan director Yusoff Shariff the operation had taken a longer time as the elephant needed to be dragged 1km to the lorry used to transport it. The two tame female elephants, Kala and Rambai, were used to coax the male tusker along. Yusoff said the other elephants in the herd were still in the forests of Manik Urai, Kelantan.— Bernama
