KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 – As widely speculated, former health minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his running mate Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong beat all challengers to emerge as the new MCA president and deputy president with a majority of 186 votes and 481 votes respectively. Liow who obtained 1,186 votes defeated former youth and sports deputy minister Gan Ping Sieu (1,000 votes), purportedly aligned to Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek’s camp, and third candidate Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, former party president who received 160 votes. Dr. Wee who obtained 1,408 votes beat former deputy finance minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai, also from Chua’s camp who received 927 votes. On record, 2,352 out of the total of 2,384 delegates or 98.66% turned up today for the party election. Nine candidates contested for the four vice-president’s posts, and two from each Liow’s and Chua’s camps won. They are Chew Mei Fun and Dr. Hou Kok Cheung (Liow’s team), and Datuk Lee Chee Leong and Chua Tee Yong (Dr. Chua’s team).
