KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 – “Why must the government stationed 30 Special Branch (SB) officers in England?” Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah posed this question during a Goods and Services Tax (GST) forum organised by Pakatan at Restaurant Nyonya Roots in Bangsar last night. She said, “why, why are they there, what exactly they do there?” She said the taxpayers pay for their stay in England, specifically in London, the people wanted to know what are the reasons for their presence there, as the two countries have no problems, diplomatic or other matters. She opined that it would be better if they patrol our Malaysian neighborhoods. The Special Branch’s London contingent, she added, was revealed in various government documents such as the 10th Malaysia Plan and the annual Budget. She said that placing 30 officers in London showed that Home Ministry did not properly allocate policing resources to combat crime. Nurul Izzah also cited the increasing number of policemen assigned to SB duties, showed that the branch is used primarily to spy on politicians. According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Special Branch members form about 10 per cent of the 115,000 members in the force.
