PADANG TERAP, 11 June 2017:
The Education Ministry is aiming to upgrade Internet broadband connectivity at 6,700 schools nationwide to at least 10Mbps by next year.
Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the target is to enable more teachers and students, especially those in rural areas, to enhance their knowledge and enjoy the convenience of Internet – in line with the rapid growth of the information communications technology (ICT).
“This had been emphasised by Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) who wanted to see education enhanced by promoting the use of ICT and digital skills among students.
Therefore, for 2017 and 2018, 1BistariNet has been given a KPI (key performance indicator) to ensure broadband connectivity in schools especially in the rural areas is upgraded.”
Mahdzir said some schools in Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula are currently still on very small aperture terminal networks and the data transfer speed was between 2Mbps and 4Mbps.
