KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18, 2015:

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has rejected the application for Bersih 4.0 to have the rally at Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok on Aug 29 and 30.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said Dataran Merdeka was only available for national events.

“We propose the organisers to change the date of the rally because both locations were involved in preparations for Independence Day parade and procession.

“DBKL cannot offer another location because it has been booked earlier for Independence Day activities,” he said at a press conference here today after a meeting with Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah

He said Padang Merbok was also going to be used by the  Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) as a place to keep the procession logistics.

“We will allow participants to sit at the roadside and we will consider them as members of the public, but they are not allowed in Dataran Merdeka or to set up tents or any other structure on the roadside.

“Action will be taken if any discomfort that befalls the people.”

He said 500 DBKL officers will be tasked for the  Independence Day parade and procession preparations.

When met at DBKL lobby, Maria said she received the decision to not allow the rally in good spirit.

She however express that she was confused with the decision as DBKL has earlier said that both venues had no activities on the said dates.

“We will not postpone the dates because it has already been planned before this.

“We have placed 500 volunteers to make sure the cleanliness is kept throughout the rally and promise that it would be a peaceful rally.

The Bersih 4.0 rally will take place on Aug 29 at 2pm until Aug 30 at 11.59pm.
