PUTRAJAYA, June 23, 2015:
MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel held a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak here today, Bernama reported.
A close aide to Palanivel, who is also the Natural Resources and Environment Minister, confirmed the meeting, which was held around 9am at the Prime Minister’s office, the news agency reported.
However, details of what transpired during the meeting were not disclosed.
The meeting was held days after Najib tweeted he would summon Palanivel to ask him to explain the latter’s statement made during a MIC special gathering at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
The Cameron Highlands lawmaker reportedly told thousands of supporters at a special gathering on Saturday that Najib and Barisan Nasional “got involved in pressuring MIC to reject the party’s 2013 election results”.
Palanivel’s comments come in the wake of a leadership tussle in the Indian-based party which also saw Palanivel “sacked” by his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, who was later named as acting president.
The sacking came hours after Palanivel himself suspended the Health Minister and 13 others for trying to proceed with a Central Working Committee meeting on June 16.
The MIC crisis erupted following differences in opinion between Palanivel and Dr Subramaniam after the Registrar of Societies issued a notice last Dec 5 directing the party to hold fresh elections for the three vice-presidential and 23 CWC posts.
The RoS had nullified the elections held in November 2013 following complaints of irregularities.
