KUALA LUMPUR, May 26, 2015:
Police have identified the masterminds who created chaos and vandalised properties during the May Day rally earlier this month.
In releasing the picture of the duo, Dang Wangi police chief Zainol Samah revealed the two were known as Mohd Afiq Ayub who goes by the alias Markio, 27, and another identified only as Ocha.
The two are said to belong to an anarchist group.
“On May 2, we arrested one of the anarchist members at Shah Alam, aged 30, based on items we found in a bag left outside the OCBC Bank at Jalan Tun Perak.
“We found a medical certificate slip in the bag and that was the lead we used to track him down.
“This individual then told us the two masterminds, Markio from Sabah and Ocha were still at large,” Zainol told reporters this afternoon.
He also said police found a Guy Fawkes’ mask, a known trademark of the group, smoke grenade as well as fireworks.
Zainol said authorities obtained the duo’s pictures from their respective Facebook pages but had yet to determine their whereabouts.
The May Day rally, which was also known as the #KitaLawan rally, was held by the Opposition on May 1 to protest against the implementation of the Goods and Services tax (GST).
The anarchist group also joined the protest but their participation took a violent turn when members threw smoke grenades, flares, fireworks and stormed into a McDonald’s outlet along Jalan Tun Perak, causing alarm to pedestrians nearby.
They also threw stones at the OCBC Bank there which led to a security guard pointing his gun at the youths when they tried to storm into the bank.
Almost 30 anarchist members were later arrested that day and taken to the Dang Wangi police station to have their statements recorded.
