KOTA KINABALU, April 15, 2015:
Talk about going back to basics: Twenty six villages in interior Sabah want bamboo fences to make a comeback, and they are doing that in style.
Promoting bamboo fences through a competition, they are currently working on one along a 11km stretch from Kampung Sunsuron Ulu and Sunsuran Bawah, right to Kampung Dabata and leading to the town area.
Organised in conjunction with the state-level Kaamatan (Harvest) Festival, the villagers use nothing but natural resources, such as bamboo and rattan.
“Those who frequent the Kota Kinabalu-Tambunan stretch will be able to enjoy this beautiful bamboo fence. This is one of the biggest attempts ever taken by the Tambunan folks,” said the festival’s organising chairman Thomas Logijin.
He said construction had started for a week, adding that the fence would also help beautify the roadside and promote bamboo which grew wild in the district.
Logijin, who is also the Tambunan district officer, said the fence will be ready just in time for the official launch of the month-long state-level Kaamatan Festival on May 1 at the Pisompuruan Square by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
“As the host district, we will ensure the event is a success and hope it will be the grandest launching ceremony ever,” he said, adding that they were expecting some 35 representatives from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to attend the event.
Apart from the bamboo fence making competition, scores of activities would also be organised, which included the Tambunan Kaamatan Charity Run, traditional sports competitions and the gong beating competition.
The highlight would be the crowning of Tambunan Unduk Ngadau (Beauty Pageant), who would be representing the district for the finale at the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) hall in Penampang on May 31.
