A Barisan Nasional lawmaker says the public, including former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should wait for the audit report on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) before criticising it.
Kulim Bandar Baharu Member of Parliament Datuk Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir said while concerns raised by the former Prime Minister had basis, time was needed to review the matter.
Abdul Aziz said that as a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) member, he too was waiting for the report by the Auditor-General.
PAC, he promised, would be transparent as the issue revolving around 1MDB had created negative perceptions on the government and Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s credibility as the Prime Minister.
“The credibility is important, because once the people lose their trust, we can no longer bring in any new decisions or policies to the people,” he told The Rakyat Post.
Abdul Aziz added there was no dispute over Najib’s leadership due to 1MDB.
He said, Najib himself had ordered for the 1MDB to be investigated and repeatedly stressed that he would bring those who were responsible to the court if there were proven irregularities.
“Tun Mahathir is confident that there are irregularities in 1MDB, but at the same time, Najib dared to appoint the Auditor-General and has brought the matter to the PAC which are represented by both Opposition and Barisan Nasional members.
“I will be the first person to step forward if there are any irregularities because all of us, Members of Parliament love this country and the people. At the same time, it is not fair for any of us to blame Najib’s leadership without any solid evidence.”
Earlier today, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said that he would only support Najib’s leadership if there were no irregularities found in 1MDB following the Auditor-General’s probe into 1MDB.
When asked whether Dr Mahathir’s criticism against Najib would lead to his resignation as to what happened with former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Aziz said the scenario now was different.
He explained that during Abdullah’s era, the latter was not able to lead as he was surrounded by incapable leaders and officers who failed to perform their duties.
“Najib is now being dragged into the 1MDB scandal, the scope is different. The question now is how can we unravel this 1MDB issue?”
