The remains of the late Tun Suhailah Mohamad Noah was buried with full military honours close to her husband former prime minister Tun Hussein Onn this afternoon.
Suhailah, who is the mother to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, was laid to rest at the Warriors Mausoleum at Masjid Negara, after Zohor prayers.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also Suhailah’s nephew, arrived at Masjid Negara with wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor to pay their last respects.
National shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei, former Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz were among a number of luminaries seen at Masjid Negara paying his respects.
Earlier, Yassin recitals and Tahlil prayers were conducted at the family’s residence where around 200 people comprising VIPs and dignitaries visited the family following her passing at 12.30am today.
They began to throng the family home at Changkat Bukit Tunku as early as 9am to pay their last respects to the wife of the nation’s third prime minister after she passed away at the Damansara Specialist Hospital.
Among the dignitaries who paid their respects included the Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah accompanied by Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar as well as cabinet ministers.
Celebrities included Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin and husband Datuk Khalid Mohamad Jiwa were also seen paying their last respects.
Suhailah leaves behind sister and widow of the late prime minister Tun Abdul Razak, Tun Rahah Mohamad Noah, 81, and six children, including Hishammuddin.
In 2007, Suhailah was admitted to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a lung problem.
Suhailah and Hussein were married on Feb 12, 1948.
Hussein passed away in 1990 from a heart attack at the Seaton Medical Centre in San Francisco in the United States.
Between 1977 to 1981, Suhailah helmed the Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti).
In 1990, she was awarded the Seri Setia Mahkota by the Federal Government which carried the title Tun.
