Wanita Umno today unanimously stood by their boss, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, after his predecessor, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad took it to his blog two days ago, in berating Najib for his alleged meek governance skills.
In a statement today, Wanita Umno chief, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said that the wing stands by Najib owing to Najib’s vision, strength and wisdom in understanding the demands of the political, economic and social landscape today.
“Najib has kept the higher values of democracy and justice at the forefront of his administration,” Shahrizat added.
“The transformation efforts spearheaded by Najib is not an easy task. His inclusive traits; wisdom and openness has made it possible for Barisan Nasional (BN) to continue helming the government and ensuring security and people’s development, unlike the opposition which continuously tries to create chaos in the country.”
Dr Mahathir, in his blog, chedet.cc, lambasted Najib and denounced his support for the latter, claiming that his criticisms over Najib’s governance was not paid any heed.
He also accused that Najib was being “soft”, and often practised silence when faced with adversity.
“I have tried to extend my views to him (Najib) directly, which are also similar thoughts of the many people who have met me.
“I have no choice but to withdraw my support. This has not been effective so I have to criticise,” Dr Mahathir wrote in his blog, chedet.cc.
He also added that Najib was no better than his predecessor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, whom Mahathir had also fiercely criticised, after stepping down.
Despite the spill of fury, Shahrizat said that Wanita Umno “still respects and appreciates suggestions, ideas and criticisms hurled by any quarters, what more from the former Umno president himself (Mahathir), or his successor (Abdullah).”
“We treasure the contributions of Dr Mahathir. Najib’s leadership meanwhile, is apt and has the full backing from Wanita Umno.
“I believe that the closeness and exchange of opinions between Najib and Dr Mahathir is capable of bringing added strength to Umno and BN, especially when discussing critical issues in the country,” said Shahrizat, who is also the special adviser to Najib.
