SIBU, Aug 11, 2014:

The government has approved another RM5 million to the Sibu District Hospital, in addition to the RM10 million it was allocated under the current 10th Malaysia Plan to upgrade its various facilities and equipment.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said with the upgrading, the hospital with its 13 specialty disciplines, could be made into a tertiary referral hospital in stages.

He was speaking to the media following a working visit to the hospital here today.

Patients from other hospitals in areas in the state’s central region, comprising Kapit, Sarikei and Mukah towns, are constantly referred to the hospital.

He said the new allocation, among others, would be used to buy more ventilation, X-ray machines, nephrology, oncology and urology machines and the like.

“We will also station a pathologist here in two to three months’ time to take charge of its newly-completed pathology complex,” added Dr Subramaniam.

He said efforts would be made to send in other specialists, adding that the shortage of medical officers and specialists was a nationwide problem at government hospitals.

He said about 1,000 doctors were currently undergoing training to tackle the issue.

On dengue, he said the people could play their part by keeping their environment clean and free of any breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito which transmitted the virus that causes dengue fever.

Meanwhile, as of Aug 8, 976 dengue cases have been reported in the state, compared with 888 cases reported last year during the same period.

Sibu district has the highest at 366 cases, followed by Miri (112) and Kuching (87).
