KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 – The Government will slash the 34 sen sugar subsidy from tomorrow to discourage Malaysians from consuming too much of the product which is the root cause of diabetes.
In his Budget 2014, PM Najib Razak said there are 2.6 million diabetics in the country.
“If left untreated, patients will face various complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and amputation,” he added.
Sugar is now sold at RM2.50 per kilogram in Peninsular and RM2.60 in East Malaysia.
Najib urged Malaysians to take care of their health by reducing sugar in their food and drinks.
The subsidy costs the government over RM567 million annually.
Countries like the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have a per capita income that is lower than Malaysia yet they pay more for their sugar.
