THE war in Syria is costing thousands of lives and has destroyed many families along the way. If you are wondering how you can contribute to help, wonder no more.
The Jengsters Project together with Fiq’s Gastronomy will organise a one-night-only culinary showcase and a fund-raising dining experience titled ‘Cooking For Syria’ on Saturday (October 31).
Inspired by stories of Syrian-born Sarah Jalloun who fled Syria for Malaysia with her son, daughter and her husband two years ago, the fine dining experience will bring joy to those who love variety and an explosion of flavours.
This eight-course gastronomic journey will be prepared and beautifully presented by Chef Syafiq Zane and team.
“My husband and I lived in Japan for 5 years and after he finished his doctorate studies there, we decided to go back to Syria in 2011. But things got complicated there and it continued until 2013 when it became difficult for us to live there as I have two kids,” said Sarah.
According to Sarah, they decided to come to Malaysia and live here in 2013. She had to leave most of her family members back in Syria while her in-laws made their move to Saudi Arabia. Fortunately there are some places in Syria that are doing quite alright and her family is still safe.
“I was asked whether I would like to collaborate and showcase a cooking demo but I wanted to contribute something more. So, I suggested a charity dinner instead,” explained Chef Fiq.
“I have been following the news, Trust me, if I’m a doctor, I would go there to help them. But I’m a chef, and I believe that God has given me this talent and creativity with food, so I might as well use it to help others in every possible way,” said Chef Fiq.
According to Chef Fiq, Sarah is the inspiration for this project. He sat down with Sarah and chatted for hours to understand the journey she took to get here and to get around the characteristics of Syrian food.
“We are going to present an 8 course meal that are freshly created with the inspiration taken from Middle East’s prominent flavours. This fund raising will not only be a fun dine moment but will also provide in-depth experience to the guests as every dish will tell stories of struggle, anger, sadness, fear, the longing for peace, harmony, hope. It will be accompanied by different music dedicated to each dish,” added Chef Fiq.
Chef Fiq hope that the response will be favourable, as he believe many people will realise that the project is a beneficial one.
“I hope this fundraising dinner would be a start to get people to take notice of what is happening in Syria and not just depend on headlines or things shared on Facebook. I am also thankful that people have shown interest in helping Syrians, so far,” said Sarah.
Tickets are priced at RM250 per person where 70% of the proceeds will be channeled to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan where more than 600,000 Syrian immigrants are currently seeking refuge.
The collective fund will be given to struggling Syrian refugee families under the UNHCR innovative programme.
