ZIANA Zain is donning a new look nowadays.

The popular Malaysian songstress and actress started officially stepping out in full hijab on the holy day of Nuzul Al-Quran, which fell on July 15 this year, to the approval of local media outlets and fans alike (

Looking very different from her previous glamorous image, Ziana has joined the ranks of several Malaysian Malay Muslim artistes, such as Neelofa, Siti Nurhaliza, and Yuna, who make covering up stylish.

For 46-year-old Ziana, who has been a fixture in the Malaysian entertainment industry for over 20 years, this was a natural progression in her life.

Aside from winning accolades for her music and acting, she is also recognised for her endorsements of brands such as L’Oreal, Slim World Beauty House and Antabax.

While it’s been awhile since she wore her songstress cap, she recently revealed to Asia One that a new album is in the works. (

Working with young singer-songwriters such as Malaysian Faizal Tahir and Singaporean Awi Rafael, it would be interesting to hear how her voice has matured over the years and how her new sound will be.

While the media portal had posed the question of whether she was concerned about whether her more conservative dressing would affect her career, I think in Malaysia that’s kind of moot.

Religious beliefs aside, in a country like Malaysia, going for the full tudung look can only enhance a Malay female artiste’s popularity with the Malay fanbase.

Plus it opens up opportunities for endorsement deals in the growing Muslimah clothing industry — there is no shortage of shops and blogshops offering the latest hijab styles for the tudung-ed fashionista.

Perhaps for Ziana, her new look and upcoming album will mark a new and exciting chapter in her long and illustrious career.
