KUALA LUMPUR, 18 April 2017:
Students may be allowed to bring electronic devices like laptops, tablets and smartphones to schools for purposes of learning.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the proposal – under the Teaching and Facilitating (PdPc) initiative – would be subject to certain classroom periods and subjects that will be determined by the ministry.
However, he said the matter had not been finalised because the ministry had to study it carefully before implementing it.
“I am still contemplating as to which devices can be allowed…maybe after further discussions, the ministry will announce its decision in the next two months.”
Mahdzir said several advanced countries like Japan and South Korea had allowed such devices to be used in schools.
He said to make the move a success, he had instructed the 1BestariNet service provider to increase broadband capacity to to 6Gbps for rural schools and 12Gbps for urban schools.
