PASIR SALAK, 8 Jan 2017:

Syarikat Padi Beras Nasional Bhd (Bernas) stands to face firm action including losing its sole right to import rice into Malaysia if the turmoil over the quality deduction rate and grading of padi is not resolved.

Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said Bernas should realise its original purpose was to help farmers and they should fulfil that objective.

“Bernas had made a pledge to the government that the company will help to develop and protect the interest of the farmers. So where is that promise?

“If Bernas cannot fulfill their obligation and this condition, we might as well end the concession agreement and give it to the National Farmers Association (Nafas) who are involved with the farmers.”

Prior to this, padi farmers had expressed dissatisfaction with Bernas for imposing a deduction (grading) rate of 40-60% for every metric tonne sold last season.

In addition, Tajuddin, who is also Pasir Salak MP, yesterday promised to take up the issue at ministerial level to find solutions to the farmers woes.
