ADDIS ABABA, March 10, 2015:
The first ever electric car assembly plant in Africa is going to be built in Ethiopia.
President Mulatu Teshome held discussions on the project here yesterday with US ambassador to Ethiopia Patricia M. Haslach and the chief executive officer of Global Electric Transportation Ltd of the US, Ken Monter.
Monter said the company would start building the assembly plant in Ethiopia in September 2015 with a start-up capital of four million US dollars at a location to be determined.
The plant would be able to produce 10,000 electric cars within three months.
Haslach said the US was expanding its strong relationship with Ethiopia in the sectors of peace and security to also include co-operation in the economic sphere. The electric car plant is part of this initiative, she added.
The cars would contribute to reducing road accidents in the country, Haslach stated.
President Mulatu said Ethiopia was working to expand its green economic development and the plant should therefore be encouraged as it is going to produce carbon-free cars.
